Navigating the new HMS regulations in Iceland with Reduzer and Industry Experts

The Icelandic construction landscape changed significantly in September 2025. With Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) now a mandatory component of building permits, many companies are working to understand what the new HMS requirements mean in practice and how to integrate LCA into everyday workflows.

To help bridge the gap between regulation and implementation, Reduzer hosted an educational seminar at Arkitektafélag Íslands. We brought together experts to break down the what, why, and how of the new rules, and to share practical guidance.

For those who couldn’t attend or who want to revisit the insights, the full session recordings are available below.

1. HMS - Understanding the New LCA Requirements

Speaker: Páll Hafstad, HMS

HMS opened the seminar with a clear overview of the current LCA requirements and what the future holds for Icelandic building permits. This session provides essential context for anyone navigating the new regulatory landscape.

2. Reduzer - Turning Compliance Into a Digital Workflow

Speaker: Eirik Resch, Founder & CEO, Reduzer

Eirik demonstrated how the Reduzer platform simplifies compliance by not only automating reporting, but also providing a collaborative workflow for LCA from early-phase to as-built. What is traditionally a complex regulatory requirement becomes a user-friendly step that guides sustainable choices throughout the project.

3. Praxis arkitektúr & A2F architects - Integrating LCA Into the Design Process

Speakers: Rafael Cao Romero Millan (Praxis arkitektúr) & Falk Krüger (A2F architects)

Rafael and Falk spoke from the perspective of the curious architect, learning how LCA can support design decisions from the very beginning of a project. With HMS now requiring LCA both at permit stage and at project completion, they highlighted why architects need to start early, even without prior LCA experience.

4. zero emission studio - LCA in Real‑World Projects

Speakers: Michael Lommertz & Per Anda, zero emission studio

Michael and Per shared how LCA has shaped real projects across Norway and Germany. With decades of combined experience in environmental design, they demonstrated how early‑stage LCA can influence material choices, reduce emissions, and guide decisions. zero emission studio offers environmental consultancy and LCA services, and now have a Reykjavík office to support Icelandic clients.
